Tikka T3 vs Howa 1500 action??

I am thinking i would like to have a fast twist 22cal hunting rifle. I am thinking ether 22x47L or a 22-250AI. I was also thinking about buying a used tikka t3 and using the action for this project. The tikka has a nice smooth bolt, decent trigger (good enough for a hunting rifle) and i like the clip idea for hunting as well. I was hoping that i could buy a shilen match barrel and have it chambered then installed on untouched tikka t3 action. I just wonder how square a tikka action would be? Do you think i can get away with this, and not have to true up the tikka action? Again, this will be a knock around hunting rifle steel plate shooter. Also if you want to chime in on the 2 different chamberings. I am not sure what one i will do. The 22-250Ai seems to be in the lead a little at this point simply because of reloading die options. The 22x47 would be pretty cool though. Anyway, thanks as always!!
Improved bench design?

First off, let me introduce myself to the crowd as Fuzzytx. I have been reading this forum and the accompanying website for three or so years. i just recently joined the forum officially.

I am a welder and fabricator by profession who owns his own shop.

Being like other people that quite often build mundane things, our minds have time to wonder aimlessly. that brings me to this subject.

I have always looked at other businesses products and wondered how i could build it myself, partly for the perceived savings (read... always would be cheaper to just buy the damn thing) or the challenge.

Having build a few swivel benches in the past, not unlike the ones advertised, they all seem to have the same problem. The seat coming off the stem or center post pry's against it exerting pressure unevenly to one or two legs. You therefore must strengthen the leg stock to keep flex to a minimum.

What if the seat was located above or slightly off-center and the table extended from the bottom of the seat? That in turn will center the mass of weight above the legs and provide for a more stable table in my thought process.

This idea may come to the market at some point so I am looking for other thoughts or things y'all might want in a table that's not offered now through the retail market.

Look forward to any suggestions or comments offered.

Thanks for your time,

Jeffery
Forum: Tools, Rests, Gadgets, Hardware

seating questions / help.

I thought I posted this last night, but I don't see anything for it today. Must have done something wrong.

I have a 6BR no turn neck. My Forster die has been reamed for no turn necks. I use the expander ball.

I've been using a Wilson micrometer seater. I've been measuring OAL to tip on 105 Amax's and 107 smk's and have been getting measurements all over the place +/- .030". Yesterday I received my sinclair bullet comparator (looks like a nut with different caliber holes drilled in it. Anyway with that the spread on the OAL is MUCH tighter but still some are in or out .001" from what I was wanting.

I am using the die by hand. In unsized new Lapua brass I'd say the wilson seater is almost impossible to use by hand. A FL size makes all the difference. All case necks are chamfered 45 deg.

My questions are: Is this the limit of the precision from this seater AND the measuring devices? Would some seating lube correct the problem? If so what lube. Is an arbor press the answer to my problems?

Thanks for the help,

JLM
Forum: Reloading Forum (All Calibers)

22" 6x47

I am contemplating between a 22" 6x47 or straight 243 win. My thinking is I will get a more complete burn from the 6x47 in the 22". Which should lead to better velocities in the given length. Also it seems the 6x47 produces very similar velocities to the 243 with the 105's, but with faster burning powders like h4350 vs rl22/25, h1000, and 4831sc that are popular in the 243 with heavier bullets and long barrels. Im trying to push the 105 berger/amax 2950+ and would really like to be over 3000.

I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with either the 6x47/243 in shorter barrels. I know there are alot of 6x47 shooters around here so I figured it would be the place to ask. Thanks for any help or advice.

Colin
Forum: 6PPC, 6-6.5x47, 6XC, 6 Rem, 243, 6-284

Fixed power or variable for my F-class rifle

Curious to know if there is a preference towards fixed power optic versus variable power for F-class shooter.

Currently, my 7mm WSM has a Leupold VX-3 6.5-20x40 with fine duplex and 1/4 moa target turrets.

My range shoots the matches at 600 yards, so my current level of is magnification good. However, if I do make it to some 1k matches a bit more magnification would be desired.

Forum: Competition Forum (All Calibers)
