Living in Gods Country North of Fort Peck resevation and hunting Coyotes for the most part I think you would be better served with the 243 you currently own. Put a new Good quality barrel on, have it free floated, and bed the action tune the trigger up and go coyote hunting.

As much as I like the 308 for accuracy and down range power, I beleive your Prarie and Bad Lands style of terrain features would be better served with the 243. Or if you want to play with something difrent a 243 AI. Also I would go with a faster twist barrel than your current set up. maybe look at a 1:9 or 1:8. Think about what Bullet you want to shoot and go from there. My favorite is the 95BergerVLD.
I had a Coyote get away one time with my truck gun chambered in 223 and after that vowed to get something that will kill them right there. 95gr Bergers do that for me.

The closest good gun smith to you that I KNOW is Joel Ackerman in Dickinson ND.
Great Falls has to have someone decent you would think?

What is your Deer rifle?
