Reposted from a question on the old board. Maybe you guys have some more thoughts?

I read the interview with Richard Schatz and saw that he set his world record at 1K shooting a 6 Dasher free recoil. Boy that sure surprised the guys at my club. Nobody at my club free-recoils past 300 yards or so. Maybe it's because they're using mostly 6.5-284s or 30s for long distance and it just doesn't work for the heavier-recoiling calibers.

How many of you guys are shooting free recoil at 500-1000 yards? What are the tricks (bag position etc.) to getting it to work?

REPLIES so far--

free recoil equation is rifle mass compare to bullet and powder load. If you use a 16.5 pounds rifle with low gravity center stock and a light bullet (in ratio to heavy bullet used in 30 cal) with small case capacit , feel recoil is close to LV or a sporter in 6 PPC and surely less

I think the trick to shooting free recoil on the 6br is a good rest/bag set up for your stock butt.

I have a 16.5 lb 6 BR Improved shooting 100 CRs at 3130. My stock has a 1/2" flat on the bottom of rear buttstock and had to try several bags to get the right feel and smooth tracking without jumping. Other than that a smooth trigger pull without disturbing the gun.
