I've decided to go ahead with this project.
I have taken into consideration the question of if this cartridge would have more capacity than necessary or to say it better will this cartridge have too much capacity that the velocity gains will be erased by degradation in barrel life and accuracy.
Understand, I’m working within reasonable limits. The 6CM, without pushing it too hard has a reasonable limit for velocity, given the cartridge. The 6CM has proven to have great accuracy as well as “believed maximum” velocities for a 6mm cartridge.
A slightly bigger case capacity will, still allow for the accuracy, barrel life and functionality for XTC shooters. What I’m looking for is 3200 fps (EASILY!) from a 6mm cartridge with the 115 bullets.
The 6CM, a 243 based cartridge has consistently given me over 3000 rounds per barrel. In this experiment, when I increase the case capacity by about 11% I don’t see any reason for the barrel life to be drastically different.
Accuracy has never been an issue. I don’t expect accuracy to be an issue with this new cartridge.
Out of balance? The way most shooters shoot the smaller 6mm’s is out of balance. Shooting too fast of a powder to obtain the same velocities is simply burning barrels.
I don’t know if this new cartridge will work. However, I’m putting the start of it out there for all us.
I will post results as they come in and I know I’m correct.
